Biography

Abstract
Judith Bardwick shares the results of her research and what she has learned about the psychological recession of today’s ever changing work-force in this discussion of her book, One Foot Out The Door.
 
“One-half to one-third of employees today are looking for something better,” she says. This “one foot out the door” attitude overwhelmingly impacts corporate productivity and profits. Bardwick emphasizes that if leaders are to re-capture the “minds, hearts, and energy” of their employees, then it is a priority that leaders re-capture the idea that employees are a valuable asset, not a liability cost to be cut when outsourcing, downsizing, and rightsizing.
 
The goal of managing success is 100% employee commitment and engagement. Leaders need to develop and promote a policy of conditional commitment; one which binds the organization and the employees in a two-way relationship. The organization offers a culture of respect and values, development opportunities, and a secure environment in return for the employee’s commitment to share his or her talents through consistent, quality performance. The benefits of conditional commitment are two-fold, the employee’s sense of pride and identity with the organization are increased, and the organization increases its core of engaged, motivated employees.
 
Bardwick introduces 6 ideas that will assist in building and maintaining a conditional commitment: 1) View the employee as an asset; 2) Demonstrate leader behaviors which facilitate employee engagement and development; 3) Achieve a “best fit” practice which leverages employee strengths and downplays employee weaknesses; as Ms. Bardwick describes it, “no matter how long the runway, pigs can’t fly!”; 4) Create and actively expand significant relationships between leader and follower; 5) Create leaders at all levels; and 6) Customize working conditions and rewards to fit the current needs of the individual, section, or the division. It is important to remember that “fair is not always identical.”
