From The Top - Be An Eagle

Posted on February 1st, 2012

General Douglas McArthur penned a timeless quote which reads: "A true leader has the confidence to stand alone, the courage to make tough decisions and the compassion to listen to the needs of others. One does not set out to be a leader, but becomes one by the quality of their actions and the integrity of their intent. In the end, leaders are like eagles ... they do not flock, you find them one at a time."

American history books are filled with incredible examples of leadership that sprang forth during times when tough decision-making was absolutely necessary. Leaders often emerge from unlikely places where one would not expect them. A leader may not know the certain path to take, yet will embrace the uncertain moment, and somehow produce the ability to lead us to our greatest successes.

McArthur nailed it when he said that one becomes a leader. I assure you that when the situation gets tough, only the strong survive and the weak quickly fall by the wayside. When we are surrounded by doubt and struck motionless by the fear of possible outcomes, it’s the leader who steps forward with a voice heard to say “Follow me!” One leader with a vision, integrity, and a healthy dose of intestinal fortitude can accomplish the unimaginable.

Be an Eagle.

Note:  Since we introduced our Contributing Authors (June 2011) each of them has (based on emails we have received) developed a group of loyal readers.  As a result, we are pleased to announce a special break-out session planned for this year’s Mason Leadership Symposium (April 24, 2012) featuring three of our Contributing Authors (Darrin Adams, Clyde Fitch, and Mary Ann Short).  It’s not too soon to register – here.  (Break-out sessions are assigned in order of registrations.)
