The 2010
Raymond E. Mason, Jr.,
Leadership Symposium
Once again, our 7th Annual Leadership Symposium was an event filled with inspiration and vision. The day began with our keynote panel of Central Ohio leaders moderated by Bill Lhota, CEO, Central Ohio Transit Authority (COTA) and featured Jo Ann Davidson, President, JAD & Associates and Former Speaker, Ohio House of Representatives; Jim Kunk, President, Central Ohio Region, Huntington Bank; Doug Kridler, President and CEO, Columbus Foundation; Kerrii Anderson, Former President and CEO, Wendy’s International; and Eddie Harrell, President, Columbus Urban League.
The question to the panel – ‘Does Leadership Apply Across All Sectors – Business, Government, Community and Education?’ was eloquently answered by this strong group of leaders, all of whom effectively lead in many different sectors. One of our goals at the Leadership Center is to broaden your leadership lens and this panel stood as an example that leadership does indeed apply across all sectors. It doesn’t matter whether you are in government or business, non-profit or education – having a vision and being able to communicate the organization’s mission or goal is what makes a good leader.
After listening to our past participants for the second year in a row, we expanded our breakout session to three. After the break-out sessions, we had three authors available to sign their books.
- Jason Barger, Step Back from the Baggage Claim
- Beth Thomas, Powered by Happy
- Allen Proctor, More Than Just Money: Practical and Provocative Steps to Nonprofit Success
During lunch, Paul Otte, Executive Director of the Leadership Center, introduced the concept of Leadership Practice – Summary of Principles and Concepts and Ideas if followed they can make you a better leader and if repeated (often enough), one of the best leaders. The idea is that even the best leaders are:
- Continually Stretching
- Consciously Thinking
- Doing Openly
- Developing Others
To learn more about our Leadership Practice principles and concepts read Our Best Leaders = Your Best Leadership, what makes some leaders better than others and what can we learn from the best?
Mallory Holtman and Sara Tucholsky, 2008 ESPY “Best Moment” award winners, were our luncheon speakers with a presentation titled, “Because Nice Matters: From the Field to the Boardroom – Being the Best You.” Their presentation began with the YouTube video of the homerun that thrust them into the spot light and why they would not let that event be the only thing that defined their lives.
After the moving luncheon presentation, the audience participated in the afternoon break out sessions. This session was followed by our unique ‘Take It Back To Work’ session where attendees gathered in sector specific facilitated groups to discuss what they learn and how they will apply their new vision.
