Symposium Review: 2005

A Note From Our President

The 2005 Raymond E. Mason, Jr. Leadership Symposium was another milestone in reaching our goal of raising the level of leadership in central Ohio business, government, education and non profit organizations.

Our speakers shared personal experiences and insightful lessons learned through their own leadership roles. Many participants commented on the fact that we were able to maintain the momentum created last year at our inaugural Symposium. We plan to continue to provide resources and events for leadership development in our community in the coming year.

Our generous sponsors this year included The Mason Foundation, Battelle, Eldon Hall, Huntington, The Nationwide Foundation and Ross Products. We appreciate their continued support and recognition of the importance of developing leaders from the education, government and non profit sectors. More than 100 participants from these sectors were able to attend the Symposium on their sponsorship.

Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to the day's success. Plan to join us next year on April 27, 2006 as we continue to take leadership to the next level.

Dr. Paul Otte
Ed.D., President, Franklin University

Our Thought-provoking Speakers

Our speakers, all leaders and proven performers, shared best practices and challenged attendees to take their leadership to the next level. With a futurist as a keynote speaker, the tone of the day focused on forward-thinking and introspection regarding societal shifts and the impact on the people we lead.

The State of Leadership in 2005

The Franklin University Leadership Center directs its efforts in response to the needs of the community. Participants were surveyed at the Symposium concerning their perception of the state of leadership in central Ohio. Their input, combined with other preliminary results from central Ohio leaders, was presented by Dr. Otte. In the coming year, the Leadership Center will direct the focus of our publications and events on improving those Indicators of Leadership that ranked lower than others this year.

In July 2005, we released the final version of our second annual State of Leadership Report that measures central Ohio leaders' perception of leadership in our community.

Who Our Participants Were

More than 350 leaders from over 165 central Ohio business, education, government and non profit organizations joined us for the second annual Raymond E. Mason, Jr. Leadership Symposium on April 28, 2005 at the Columbus Convention Center.

Several attendees wrote us to say thank you:

Thank you to all those who led and served so that the participants could become stronger servant leaders!! It was tremendously encouraging. The blending of the four sectors pulled together most of the community leaders.

A "battery charging" experience. The quality of plenary sessions was excellent. Maj. General Stanley and David Pearce Snyder were insightful, thought provoking and had excellent delivery. Franklin University is bringing something special to Columbus with the Leadership Symposium. Thank you.
