Symposium Review: 2004
A Note From Our President
By the end of the Symposium, people seemed to be walking several feet above the ground. I was impressed with the speakers, not only with their leadership insight, but also because of their leadership by example. Many speakers attended, and were actively involved in the sessions of other presenters. I spent the day listening to participants tell me about their favorite session and the leadership lessons they were taking back to work.
The attendees that were new to Franklin were asking me how they can learn more about Franklin and our leadership resources (the answer: leadership.franklin.edu). Franklin graduates and students were sharing how proud they are of their university. While all of this was indicative of a great success, I was most pleased with the number of people that participated in our last session of the day and discussed with great enthusiasm how they could and would apply what they had learned beginning the very next day.
Although just the first step in a thousand mile journey, the results convinced me that we can and will raise the level of leadership in Central Ohio, not because of what we do, but due to the committed, caring, and even courageous leaders that came to our Symposium.

Who Our Participants Were
Over 300 leaders from central Ohio business, community, education and government organizations participated in the inaugural Leadership Symposium on April 29, 2004.
Several attendees wrote us to say thank you:
"Compelling, challenging, encouraging, inspiring. A mandate to go forth in leadership. Thanks!" –Ruth McNeil, Outreach Coordinator for U.S. Representative Deborah Pryce
"Starting anything new is never easy, which makes today so remarkable. The time, effort and thought that so many people put into making today possible was obvious. Everyone involved should be extremely proud of this event."
"Thank you so much–a very provocative day–lots of good new ideas, validation of many of my beliefs and values. Again–thank you!"
"Thank you for your generous sponsorship to the Leadership Symposium. The day has enlarged my borders in the leadership arena. I'm excited about giving some new ideas a test drive."
"Thank you for such an excellent set of speakers with up-to-date leadership thoughts and research. It's been a real treat!"
"Thank you for including me in this wonderful session. As our program grows, I find myself challenged daily with adapting. I hope to use the information learned here today to be a wiser leader and a life-long learner."
"Please convey my appreciation to the Mason Foundation, Nationwide Insurance, Battelle, Thee Reinberger Foundation and any other person or organization that helped provide me the opportunity to attend the symposium. It certainly started my thinking about how I can do more to exert leadership in my present position as well as provide me additional incentive to aspire to other positions in the future. And thanks to Franklin University for coordinating the whole affair."
